Ice Cube’s ‘War of the Worlds’ scores zero per cent on Rotten Tomatoes
Following the release of the science-fiction movie War of the Worlds, starring Ice Cube, the derided remake has scored zero per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.
The new movie, released on Prime Video on July 30th, is the latest remake of the classic HG Wells novel from 1898. Notably, it was first brought to the screen in 1953 by director Byron Haskin and has since gone on to achieve classic status.
Then, in 2005, Steven Spielberg delivered a new take on the novel with Tom Cruise in the lead role, which was a huge success at the box office and took home $600 million.
Now, it has been remade once again with Ice Cube and Eva Longoria in the lead roles. The synopsis reads: “A gargantuan invasion is coming with this fresh take on the legendary novel of the same name. Renowned actress Eva Longoria is joined by iconic rapper and actor Ice Cube, along with Michael O’Neill and Iman Benson, for a thrilling out-of-this-world adventure that is filled with present-day themes of technology, surveillance, and privacy.”
Yet, it has landed the rare feat of scoring a critic’s score of zero per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, making it part of an exclusive club that only features 44 other movies in history, including Gotti, starring John Travolta, and the maligned London Fields, starring Amber Heard.
While Ice Cube has not directly addressed criticism to the movie, his son and fellow actor, O’Shea Jackson Jr, offered an explanation for its failure on X. In response to a user who wrote, “I truly can’t believe this adaptation of War Of The Worlds is actually a real film with a real budget and Ice Cube is actually in it,” Jackson Jr wrote, “Shot during the pandemic. Released 5 years later.”
Strangely, the movie was only officially announced on July 24th when the trailer arrived online, which was less than a week before it arrived on Prime Video. There has also been no press tour for the movie from Ice Cube or Longoria.
