Watch ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ dramatic teaser trailer

A year before it hits cinemas, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping has released a dramatic teaser trailer.

This movie is set 40 years after the prequel, The Ballads of Songbirds & Snakes, but 24 years before the initial Hunger Games series.

The trailer, which has almost two million views at the time of writing, opens with Glenn Close in a restrictive yellow costume, addressing a crowd of onlookers. “Welcome, Panem, to the glorious reaping of District 12,” she says.

The clip then pans into an arena, as she explains, “Twice the number of tributes, twice the glory.” The young men and women look around at each other with expressions of fear, disgust, and resolve.

“It’s time for the Second Quarter Quell,” she shares, as the screen splits into a countdown from ten to zero. “Let the fiftieth Hunger Games begin!” she yells.

Throughout the trailer, we see depictions of Jesse Plemons as young Plutarch Heavensbee, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman in the initial film series, and Ralph Fiennes as a younger President Snow. Also included in the trailer is Elle Fanning as the young Effie Trinket, made famous first by Elizabeth Banks.

Viewers also see the first depiction of Joseph Zada and Whitney Peak, who play the lead roles as Haynith Abernathy and his girlfriend, Lenore Dove Baird.

At the end of the trailer, Haymitch, played previously by Woody Harrelson, remarks in the voice over, “I think these games are going to be different,” as a volcano seemingly explodes in the distance.

Published on March 18th, 2025, Sunrise on the Reaping sold 1.5 million copies of the book in its first week on sale in the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The movie franchise has been just as successful: the five films in the franchise have taken in more than $3.3billion at the global box office.

Francis Lawrence will return to the director’s chair as The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will be released on November 20th, 2026.
