How many movies has Clint Eastwood directed?
After many years of classic American western movies that depicted heroism and patriotism at the heart of the country’s belief system, the spaghetti western sub-genre emerged, which was much more violent and nihilistic. These films stemmed from Europe, namely Italy, but the most influential spaghetti westerns of all time, Sergio Leone’s Dollars trilogy, featured American actor Clint Eastwood.
The actor had appeared in various films and shows before landing a role in the first instalment, A Fistful of Dollars, but Leone’s movie helped introduce him to the cinematic mainstream. After the trilogy, which included the landmark movie The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Eastwood appeared in more westerns like Hang ‘Em High, Paint Your Wagon, and Two Mules for Sister Sara.
It wasn’t long before Eastwood decided to direct a film of his own. He released Play Misty For Me in 1971, which was not a western, interestingly, but a psychological thriller. Featuring a deranged female character, Evelyn Draper, who stalks a radio DJ played by Eastwood, the movie was well-received and showed Eastwood’s talent as a director.
Between starring in more movies, like Dirty Harry and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Eastwood continued to direct movies, often casting himself in them. In fact, Eastwood has now made 40 films, with his most recent effort being Juror #2.
It seems as though he prefers to star in his own creations, perhaps enjoying the freedom of being in creative control of his career.

How many movies has Clint Eastwood directed that he didn’t star in?
Eastwood often stars in his movies, but there are some he decided to stay behind the camera for – 16 to be precise. The first film he didn’t have a real role in (apart from a cameo as a man in the crowd) was 1973’s Breezy. He then starred in all ten movies he directed until 1988’s Bird, a biopic about Charlie Parker.
Again, he appeared in every movie he directed from then until 1997’s Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Since the 2000s, but particularly the 2010s, Eastwood has starred in less and less of his own films. He didn’t appear in 2003’s Mystic River, 2006’s Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, 2008’s The Changeling, 2009’s Invictus, 2010’s Hereafter, 2011’s J. Edgar, 2014’s Jersey Boys and American Sniper, 2016’s Sully, 2018’s The 15:17 to Paris, 2019’s Richard Jewell, and 2024’s Juror #2.
…and is Juror #2 actually Clint Eastwood’s last movie?
Without sounding too morbid, it’s unlikely we’ll get another Eastwood film, considering that the filmmaker is now 94 years old, leaving many people believing that Juror #2 is Eastwood’s final movie. Yet, Eastwood is nothing short of prolific, and in the past decade, he has released six movies, so there really seems to be no stopping him.
The movie stars Nicholas Hoult as Justin, a journalist who must attend jury duty only to discover that he might have been responsible for the crime. Eastwood’s film also features JK Simmons, Toni Collette, Zoey Deutch, and Chris Messina, and since its release in October 2024, it has received positive reviews.
