Bristol band Home Counties clearly know where they are heading. The band have delivered a searing political new single titled ‘Where The Money’s Gone’ which not only pushes you towards picking up the new EP but that the future is stupidly bright for this band.
As the first notes of the riff land like a leading question, there’s no doubt where this track is going to go; a trip across Europe as the group perfectly pick out the plot holes in the right-wing argument. It’s an expert piece of songwriting that was born out of spontaneity and does a great job jabbing at its target without ever trying to deliver a killer blow.
In a time of such fiercely divided politics, there’s no real need for a deliberate attack on the other wing of the flea-ridden pigeon we call Britain. But what Home Counties do so well on this track is being extremely clever with it.
“It’s possibly the most lyrically simple track of the EP,” singer Will Harrison told DIY of the song. “Its message is so to the point, it probably even seems quite juvenile.” While there’s certainly some truth in that statement we’d argue by using the reductive almost post-modern language, the band make a stronger point, and it’s a point that needs to be made.
“It’s about contemporary conversations of where money goes and comes from,” we’ve all had those, haven’t we? Arguing with your stroppy old uncle who despite being roughly 57 has no problem in taking credit for World War 2. “It was written very spontaneously around the time of Brexit and the last general election,” continues Harrison, “and presents an oversimplified conversation about tax havens, immigration and welfare.”
“It’s the only song that came directly out of a jam session, including the lyrics, which have remained unchanged. It was so much fun recording it – we did all the vocals all at the same time in a room facing each other, and I think the final recording captures the fun we were having in the room. Home Counties is a way more collective effort than our previous project, so I think this song is the perfect encapsulation of our process and intent.”
If that intent is to write challenging and captivating songs with a fresh new slant, then we’d say they’ve nailed it.
