Hollywood stars unite for Planned Parenthood amid Donald Trump’s funding cuts
Over 250 celebrities have signed a Planned Parenthood advert, which supports the organisation’s healthcare initiatives in direct response to Donald Trump’s recent funding cuts.
The advert’s rhetoric is clearly in opposition of Pro-Life politics. It reads: “I’m for Planned Parenthood because I’m for freedom… because I’m for healthcare… because I’m for you and me—not the government—deciding what care we need and where we can get it.”
Rolling Stone exclusively revealed the list of signees on the advert. In the film industry, signees include, but are not limited to: Laverne Cox, Pedro Pascal, Scarlett Johansson, Cara Delevingne, Zoey Deutch, Melissa McCarthy, Natasha Lyonne, Alexandra Shipp, and Julianne Nicholson.
Plenty of musicians have shown their solidarity through this advert, too. Cyndi Lauper, Billie Eilish, Meghan Trainor, Phoebe Bridgers, Clairo, Mitski, Miley Cyrus, Gracie Abrams, Harry Styles, Sara Bareilles and Sheryl Cow have put their name firmly on the dotted line.
Some celebrities have expanded on the ad’s message. For example, actor Laverne Cox stated: “Trans people need health care providers they can trust, just like everyone else. Planned Parenthood health centers are a lifeline for so many across this country who rely on them for inclusive care.”
Other signees of the petition include Hailey Bieber, Hari Nef, Paramore, King Princess, Soccer Mommy, Karlie Kloss, Kendall Jenner, and more. “We are Artists. Creators. Storytellers,” the advert reads. “We are the new generation stepping into our power. Now we are being robbed or our power. We will not go back — and we will not back down,” the letter reads.
Signee Phoebe Bridgers has already openly supported Planned Parenthood from a personal angle. “I had an abortion in October of last year while I was on tour,” she wrote on social media in 2022. “I went to Planned Parenthood where they gave me the abortion pill. It was easy. Everyone deserves that kind of access.”
One of Trump’s anti-choice moves was via an executive order that aimed to prohibit federal funding for elective abortions when he took office. Further, it was estimated that more than 8,000 women have died from pregnancy and birth complications as a direct result of Trump’s freezing of US aid funding.
