Holger Czukay, bassist and co-founder of Can, dies aged 79

Holger Czukay, the co-founder and bassist of pioneering German krautrock band Can, has died aged 79.

Czukay formed Can in 1968 alongside fellow bandmates Irmin Schmidt on the keyboard, drummer Jaki Liebezeit and guitarist Michael Karoli

The 79-year-old, whose wife passed away in July, was found by a neighbour at his apartment, converted from Can’s old studio – a converted cinema – in Weilerswist near Cologne.

The cause of death is unknown and Czukay’s passing comes as the second loss to Can as founding drummer Liebezeit passed away in January.

Born in Poland in 1938, Czukay studied under Karlheinz Stockhausen in the 60s before starting Can thirty years later. Czukay played on – and engineered – all nine of Can’s albums, including their famed records Ege Bamyasi and Tago Mago before leaving the band in 1977 to embark on a solo project.
