Henry Cavill discusses James Bond rumours: “We’ll see”
For many years, Henry Cavill has been linked with taking over from Daniel Craig as James Bond, and the British actor has now poured more fuel onto the fire.
Over recent months, Aaron Taylor Johnson has emerged as the stand-out favourite for the much-sought after role. However, at this stage, despite Taylor Johnson receiving public support from former 007 George Lazenby, it remains speculation and no decision has been made on who will be replacing Craig in the franchise.
In February, Taylor Johnson threw his hat in to the ring, and stated, “It’s flattering. You can have something really positive [written about you], but you can also have something really negative that can circulate. You just want to stay in your lane.”
Two months later, from his comments, it still looks uncertain who will become the next Bond, and the rumour mill has continued to go into overdrive. Now, Cavill has reaffirmed his ambitions to take the reins as 007.
During a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Cavill was inevitably asked about starring in the legendary spy series, and his latest comments will only get tongues wagging further. The actor told the host: “I have no idea. All I have to go off of is the rumours. I have the same information you have.”
Nevertheless, Cavill did express worry about his age, with the 40-year-old believing he may have passed the threshold, noting, “Maybe I’m too old now or maybe I’m not. We’ll see what the [producers] plans are.”
The star, who appears in Guy Ritchie’s new movie, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, previously told GQ in 2020 that he would “jump at the opportunity” if the producers gave him a chance.
Furthermore, speaking to The Times in 2021, he stated, “Time will tell. You don’t know which direction they want to take Bond in and so I like to say that everything’s always on the table.”
It still remains unforeseen when Bond will return to the big screen. Last year, Barbara Broccoli who runs the Bond estate along with her half-brother Michael G. Wilson, claimed there was a “big road ahead” before a new movie arrived.
“I go back to [1995’s] GoldenEye when everyone was saying ‘the cold war is over, the wall is over,” Broccoli explained, referring to the character’s ability to transcend eras. “Bond is dead, no need for Bond, the whole world’s at peace, and now there’s no villains’ – and boy, was that wrong!”
She added: “Daniel gave us the ability to mine the emotional life of the character … and also the world was ready for it. I think these movies reflect the time they are in, and there’s a big, big road ahead reinventing it for the next chapter and we haven’t even begun with that.”
