Henry Cavill confirmed for new live-action anime role

Amazon Studios are producing a new live-action adaptation of Voltron and Henry Cavill is set to star.

In the 1980s, a television series called Voltron borrowed its story from two Japanese anime series, Armored Fleet Dairugger XV and Beast King GoLion. The series has been continually revamped over the decades, with the most recent seasons airing from 2016-2018.

The show followed a group of pilots who steer Voltron, a super robot. A live-action movie adaptation of the series has been in the works for almost two decades now, with talks beginning in the mid-2000s. Since then, a number of big names have been attached to the project, including Mark Gordon and Pharrell Williams.

Now, Voltron is finally set to be adapted into a movie with Rawson Marshall Thurber at the helm. Daniel Quinn-Toye, who previously appeared in the BBC Three sit-com Badults, was announced to star in the new film earlier this month. Now, Cavill joins him on the call sheet.

Cavill’s role in the film has not yet been revealed, nor has the plot of the new adaptation. Thurber, who previously directed modern comedy classics like Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and We’re the Millers, is set to both direct and co-write the film, the latter alongside Ellen Shanman. His more recent endeavours include action flicks Skyscraper and Red Notice.

Cavill is no stranger to a previously established franchise. In 2013, he took on the mammoth task of portraying Clark Kent in the DC Extended Universe, a role he has reprised many times since and that has come to define his career. His most recent appearance as Superman was in 2023’s The Flash, though it was a short, uncredited part.

Earlier this year, Cavill shrugged off Superman to work with the DCEU’s superhero competitor, the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He made an appearance in Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starred in the title roles, while Cavill played a character dubbed as Cavillrine in a short cameo.

Cavill also stars in In the Grey, the upcoming action flick from Guy Ritchie, which is scheduled to hit cinemas early next year. In the Grey features a star-studded cast beyond Cavill, featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rosamund Pike and Eiza Gonzàlez.

A release date for the live-action movie adaptation of Voltron is yet to be revealed. Fortunately for those hoping to see Cavill on their screens sooner rather than later, In the Grey is set for release on January 17th, 2025.
