Helsinki is the new project by Babyshambles bassist Drew McConnell, who has got together with a few of his rock ‘n’ roll friends.
The result is a band that sound a little more heartfelt than some of the more swashbuckling pieces of work he has produced with Babyshambles, but it is certainly no less enjoyable.
‘Rising Heights’ is the latest track to be revealed by McConnell, a kind of melancholy pop ditty that echoes the triumphs of the likes of Badly Drawn Boy and Bill Ryder-Jones.
What’s more, Helsinki have just announced that they have signed up to Fierce Panda Records, who will release the full length album A Guide For the Perplexed on March 2nd.
The debut record has been confirmed as boasting cameos from the likes of McConnell’s Babyshambles bandmate Pete Doherty, as well as Albert Hammond Jr, Matt Park of The Mystery Jets and Stephen Large, who has played keys for Squeeze and Paul Heaton. The current live band also includes former Babyshambles guitarist Patrick Walden.
Until it gets its full release, however, you’ll just have to sit back and enjoy the hugely promising glimpse of what is to come in the shape of ‘Rising Heights’. The single will be available for download on February 22nd and can be streamed below right now.
