HBO cast doubt upon the third season of ‘Euphoria’

HBO have postponed their plans to shoot the third season of the hit drama Euphoria, but maintain the series will still eventually go ahead.

The programme, starring Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Maude Apatow and the late Angus Cloud, originally aired in 2019. Due to delays relating to the pandemic, the second season didn’t arrive until 2022.

Now, it seems it will be another lengthy wait until the third season finally arrives on screen. Despite plans to begin shooting within the next few months, it was pushed back because creator Sam Levinson needed more time to finish the script.

In a statement provided to Deadline, HBO said: “HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season. In the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.”

Their decision to allow talent to work on other projects suggests there is no current timeframe for filming the upcoming season. Furthermore, talent such as Sweeney, Elordi and Zendaya are three of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood, and will all be inundated with exciting offers following HBO’s statement.

In November, HBO executive Casey Bloys maintained at a presentation in New York City that the broadcaster planned to air the third season of Euphoria in 2025. While Deadline understands this remains the aim, the new delays do throw a spanner in the works.

Additionally, in January, Bloys provided an update: “He’s writing Season 3 right now, he’s in the thick of it. So I don’t know that he is laying out what the future looks like. It’s just getting Season 3 done.”

Meanwhile, during a recent conversation with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Sweeney refrained from divulging significant information about the upcoming series, stating, “Honestly, it’s, like, as scary as talking about Marvel.”

The Madame Web star added: “I said one thing, and it went everywhere.” Additionally, when asked about receiving scripts for the third season, Sweeney coyly replied, “Maybe. I don’t know.”

However, she did express love for her character, noting, “Cassie truly is a dream to play, and as an actor, I’m so fortunate that I’ve had a character like her at such a young age. And, of course, I wanna keep living her crazy. I love it.”

Although the script is still yet to be finalised, Levinson described the upcoming third season as “film noir” and hinted at a thematic departure following Rue, played by Zendaya, becoming sober. The show runner said this life-altering decision will see the character “explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world”.
