Hayley Williams speaks out against Christian music industry amid sex scandal

After the notorious frontman of a Christian rock band, Michael Tait, confirmed sexual abuse allegations against his name, rock superstar Hayley Williams has spoken out against the industry.

Williams shared a screenshot of a Guardian piece online, which detailed Tait’s misconduct. The piece outlined his abuse and excessive drug use as “the biggest open secret in Christian music”. Two of Tait’s three alleged victims say he drugged them. Four more describe “inappropriate” behaviour; one survivor says the musician “destroyed my life”.

Tait addressed rumours in part, releasing a statement admitting that, “For some two decades I used and abused cocaine, consumed far too much alcohol, and, at times, touched men in an unwanted sensual way.” As he saw it, this “double life” was made of “sinful” behaviour, and he said he was newly searching for repentance.

William was raised on Church music and has a background in the Christian music world. As a result, her comments on the affair were impassioned. She wrote, “No one but the TikTokker who broke this story has said a word about Michael Tait needing gay affirming support. Because this is a man who’s entire faith identity is built upon a faulty structure of self-hatred, to please a system that would rather cover up abhorrent behavior for 20+ years (and make money off of it) rather than accept that being gay is not the problem.”

She continued, stressing first that she was “not afraid of any of these people” as “most of them have written me off anyway by now.” Williams recounts, “how many stories like this from this VERY small corner of the music industry will we hear before we realize that capatalizing on people’s faith and vulnerability is the “sin”.

Adding: “I hope the ccm industry crumbles.”

The Paramore frontman recognises the problem may lay closer to home than anyone realises, finishing her scathing statement with the words, “fuck all of you who knew and didnt do a damn thing. I bet I’ve got your number. And btw if you’re not angry too, then maybe it’s time to question why.”

Tait rose to fame in the group DC Talk, which had groundbreaking success on the charts in the 1990s. After this, he joined the Christian rock band Newsboys in 2009, though he abruptly stepped down in January 2025. After the news of these shocking allegations broke, his remaining bandmates wrote online, “We are horrified, heartbroken and angry at this report and in many ways, we feel as if we and our families have been deceived for the past fifteen years.”
