Harry Styles shares touching tribute to One Direction bandmate Liam Payne
Following the sudden death of One Direction star Liam Payne, his former bandmate Harry Styles has become the latest member of the group to shar a touching tribute to his friend.
Payne passed away, aged 31, on October 16th, 2023, after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. He had been holidaying in Argentina and was in the country to watch his former One Direction bandmate, Niall Horan, in concert at the city’s Movistar Arena on October 2nd.
Following the tragic news of Payne’s death, tributes from across the world have been posted online by his army of fans and many notable names from the world of music. Following that life-changing moment following their formation on The X Factor, in their six years together, the quintet became one of the best-selling boy bands ever. Elsewhere, Liam Gallagher, Olly Murs, Ronnie Wood, and even Payne’s beloved West Bromwich Albion football club have paid their respects to Payne.
The most notable of all the tributes was the collective one issued by One Direction collectively, in a joint statement posted on Instagram. Asking for time to process the loss or their friend, they said: “We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us.”
Three of the four surviving members have now released individual statements, too. On October 17th, Harry Styles expressed his heartbreak and shared fond memories of his time with Payne.
“I am truly devastated by Liam’s passing,” Styles wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of Payne performing. “His greatest joy was making other people happy, and it was an honour to be alongside him as he did it.”
He continued, “Liam lived wide open, with his heart on his sleeve, he had an energy for life that was infectious. He was warm, supportive, and incredibly loving. The years we spent together will forever remain among the most cherished years of my life. I will miss him always, my lovely friend.”
Styles concluded by saying that his “heart breaks” for “Karen, Geoff, Nicola and Rush, his son Bear, and all those around the world who knew and loved him, as I did.”
Louis Tomlinson promises to be “the Uncle” to Liam Payne’s son
In addition to the band’s joint statement, Louis Tomlinson issued a separate one regarding his friend’s passing, stating that Payne was someone who he “looked up to everyday, such a positive, funny, and kind soul.”
After emotionally reflecting on how their friendship blossomed when they were teenagers, the Doncaster native wrote: “I feel beyond lucky to have had you in my life but I’m really struggling with the idea of saying goodbye. I’m so grateful that we got even closer since the band, speaking on the phone for hours, reminiscing about all the thousands of amazing memories we had together is a luxury I thought I’d have with you for life. I would have loved to share the stage with you again but it wasn’t to be.”
Tomlinson also promised to be there to help Payne’s young son, Bear, stating, “I want you to know that if Bear ever needs me, I will be the Uncle he needs in his life and tell him stories of how amazing his dad was.”
Zayn Malik reflects on loss of “brother” Liam Payne
Former One Direction member Zayn Malik also posted a personal tribute on Instagram. He said: “I never got to thank you for supporting me through some of the most difficult times in my life.”
After sharing his own personal memories of the headstrong and upbeat Payne, he wrote: “I lost a brother when you left us and can’t explain to you what I’d give to just give you a hug one last time and say goodbye to you properly and tell you that I loved and respected you dearly.”
Malik noted that he is devastated by the loss and hopes that wherever Payne is “right now”, he’s “at peace”.
How did Liam Payne pass away?
Following Payne’s death, medical authorities have now revealed the official cause, revealing that the singer could be not aided.
The preliminary autopsy report (via Billboard) states that Payne died following internal and external traumas sustained in the fall. According to the medical personnel, there were multiple injuries sustained that were unsurvivable.
When reflecting on their arrival at the scene, Argentine medical director Alberto Crescenti explained that they had “no possibility of doing anything” to help Payne, singling out a massive fracture in his skull.
Before the tragic incident, the hotel manager claimed that the singer was aggressive with the staff and appeared under the influence when he checked into the hotel. After monitoring his behaviour that night, the manager called emergency services on behalf of Payne, saying, “I don’t know if the guest’s life is in danger because he is in a room with a balcony, and we are afraid he could do something that threatens life.”
When the emergency services arrived on the scene, the report states that they found substances in his room alongside alcohol. The autopsy also said that Payne’s body was taken to the Judicial Morgue, but have since concluded that the injuries sustained in the fall show no signs of a struggle.
