Harrison Ford responds to ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ flopping: “Shit happens”

Harrison Ford has revealed he isn’t overly concerned about the box office failure of the most recent instalment of the Indiana Jones franchise.

James Mangold’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was released in June 2023 and earned $384 million at the box office. That might sound like a handsome sum, but not when compared to the budget, which is estimated to have been somewhere between $295–387 million. As a result, it lost about $143 million for Disney.

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal yesterday, the star said, “Shit happens. I was really the one who felt there was another story to tell. When [Indy] had suffered the consequences of the life that he had to live, I wanted one more chance to pick him up and shake the dust off his ass and stick him out there, bereft of some of his vigour, to see what happened.”

Many fans of the franchise didn’t take kindly to the new angle, which focused on the whip-wielding archaeologist and his relationship with his estranged goddaughter (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) as they try to avert a Nazi scientist from changing the outcome of World War II.

Despite trying to recapture the suspense and thrill of the first Indiana Jones movies, it was widely considered to be lacking in the action department, and at 154 minutes, it dragged in places.

Ford was clear before the film came out that it would be his last time playing the character. He was in his thirties when he first stepped into the role for Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, and 80 in the fifth instalment.

Despite the flop, the actor revealed that he has no regrets about the 2023 film, saying, “I’m still happy I made that movie.” He also clarified that he will have no involvement in the rumoured television series reboot.
