Halsey reveals health problems: “I’m lucky to be alive”

Pop star Halsey has opened up about her recent health struggles, admitting she feels “lucky to be alive”.

The singer’s announcement coincides with the release of her new single, ‘The End’, which sees Halsey reflect on the challenging period in her life. While she’s not detailed the specifics of her diagnosis at this stage, proceeds from the single will be donated to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Lupus Research Alliance.

The new cut was produced by Michael Uzowuru and Alex G, who also plays guitar in ‘The End’. It marks the first track by Halsey from her forthcoming fifth album which is set to arrive later this year, and is set to be the follow-up to 2021’s Nine Inch Nails-produced, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power.

On Instagram, Halsey explained her hiatus from music, and promised more songs would follow in the near future, stating, “Long story short, I’m lucky to be alive. Short story long, I wrote an album.”

After a traumatic couple of years, Halsey is set to make up for lost time, adding, “I feel like an old lady. I told myself I’m giving myself two more years to be sick. By 30, I’m having a rebirth, and I’m not gonna be sick, and I’m gonna look super hot and have lots of energy, and I’m just gonna re-do my 20s in my 30s. Seriously.”

On ‘The End’, she references her health problems, and sings, “Every couple of years now, a doctor says I’m sick, Pulls out a brand new bag of tricks, And then they lay it on me, And at first, it was my brain, then a skeleton in pain, And I don’t like to complain, but I’m saying sorry.”

In 2022, the singer revealed she had been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Sjogren’s syndrome, mast cell activation syndrome and postural tachycardia syndrome. Halsey said at the time: “My health has changed a lot since I got pregnant and gave birth. I started getting really sick, I’ve been kind of sick most of my adult life.”

She also said that it took eight years of visiting doctors to receive an official diagnosis for her problems, and “trying to figure out what was wrong with me.” Halsey added: “I was called crazy and anxious and lazy amongst other things. I changed my entire lifestyle.”

While her health problems have been a stain on her adult life, Halsey is determined to resume her music career with her upcoming album, which has been previewed by ‘The End’.
