Grizzly Bear – ‘Will Calls’

When reviewing anything, it’s important to be fair, unbiased and impartial. So I’ll start this one honestly. I fucking love Grizzly Bear.

They’re back with a track that’s so beautiful, you probably would too. Part of a Shields re-release, this is just one demo on the 18-track monster that you’ll get for your pennies; every note feels crafted with absolute care and precision. Why they didn’t include it on the original release is beyond me.

The seven-minute-long lesson in composition grabs your attention the whole way through, a rare quality for tracks of such duration.

The track has got everything we’ve come to expect from the hipster idols: rising vocals, moody intros and catchy choruses, and if you listen really, really carefully, you can hear crickets chirping in the background, a nice little touch inspired by Marfa, the town where they were recording. It’s this attention to detail that really separates Grizzly Bear from the pretenders.

It’s been a while since they were an up-and-coming band, so I’ll save you the usual spiel about getting down to your local club, grabbing a Stella and checking them out. Just set this on repeat and let the weekend roll on.
