Green Day are developing a new comedy movie

Green Day are developing and inspiring a new movie. In collaboration with Live Nation Productions, the band is creating a comedy film roughly based on their own origins.

This isn’t the first time the band have turned their talents to a different medium. Their 2004 rock opera album American Idiot has been the basis for a stage show since 2010. Initially, there were plans to adapt it into a film, but in 2020, singer Billie Joe Armstrong said that the film was “pretty much scrapped” without releasing any reason.

However, fans are finally getting a Green Day movie on the big screen as the band are working on New Years Rev, a comedy coming-of-age flick roughly based on their experiences as a band.

According to Variety, the film follows a band of three friends, confirmed to be played by Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman and Ryan Foust, who are travelling to Los Angeles, mistakenly believing that they’ve got the opportunity to open for Green Day on New Year’s Eve.

While this fictional band look up to Green Day, the tale of the three younger boys is inspired by the band’s own early years as a group. As per the tagline for the project, “Their road trip is a rowdy and mischievous jaunt across the country filled with adventures, based on the exploits of Green Day and their years of living in a tour van.”

The movie is being written and directed by Lee Kirk. It will feature his wife and star of the US Office, Jemma Fischer, along with her old co-star, Angela Kinsey. Young stars Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Keen Ruffalo, the son of Mark Ruffalo, are set to star as well.

“Van days rule. You will drive all night on no sleep then play a show for 10 kids in a basement of a friend of a friend’s house 50 miles east of anywhere you’ve ever heard of,” said Billie Joe Armstrong in a statement.

He added, “But you’ll do it again the next day and the one after that. Because you’re doing it with your bandmates who become your family, and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever known. It’s electric. Let the music and mischief ensue.”

The production is already underway in Oklahoma. There is no information yet about a possible release date.
