Green Day forced to cancel final Australian tour date due to tropical cyclone

Pop punk legends Green Day have been forced to call off the final date of their three-day visit to Australia on their ‘Saviors Tour’, citing extreme weather conditions.

Having performed earlier this month in Melbourne and Sydney, the band have now been advised to cancel their upcoming performance at the Cbus Super Stadium in Robina, Queensland, on March 5th due to the arrival of Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Local residents have been told to brace themselves for severe flooding and wind speeds reaching 130km/h, as the state is expected to experience its first landfall in over 50 years.

In a social media post, the band said: “With Cyclone Alfred bringing some seriously nasty weather, it’s just not possible to go ahead safely.” The venue have also released a statement, confirming that the meteorological phenomenon has made it impossible to continue with the concert as planned.

It read: “We know how excited fans were for the concert, and we share your disappointment,” says the message. “Concert organisers explored every opportunity to go ahead with the event, but the safety and travel certainty of concertgoers, performers and staff cannot be ensured under current conditions.”

Due to the band’s tour continuing around the world, their next performance is a headline appearance at the third edition of Lollapalooza India on March 9th. It has also been confirmed that Green Day will be unable to reschedule their appearance on Australia’s Gold Coast, and ticket holders will be refunded from the point of purchase.

Their recent dates in Australia mark the first time the band has performed in the country since 2017. They had also cancelled tour dates there due to restrictions put in place following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
