Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong reflects on FireAid collaboration with Billie Eilish: “It was an honour”

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has said the opportunity to perform with Billie Eilish at the FireAid benefit concert in Los Angeles on January 31st was “an honour”.

Eilish came out on stage to collaborate with Armstrong and his bandmates at the Kia Forum benefit show on January 30th, singing a version of Green Day’s 2009 song ‘Last Night on Earth’. It was chosen specifically due to the relevancy of the ongoing fire relief efforts they had turned out in force to raise money for.

The band shared photos of themselves on stage along with Eilish on their Instagram later that evening, saying: “It was an absolute honour to play FireAid last night. We had the best time with our friend Billie Eilish, who joined us for ‘Last Night On Earth’. LA, we are sending all our love to you. You can still donate to fire relief efforts at fireaidla.org.”

Meanwhile, while speaking to Billboard, Armstrong reflected, “I saw her play a couple of times and she was fantastic, and you just knew something special was gonna happen with her. But the fact that we got to play together… she’s a pretty awesome young lady, and it was an honour to be able to share the stage with her.”

The performance from this pop and punk fusion was one of the key highlights of the night, with stars from across the music world and Hollywood gracing the stage in huge numbers to support the relief efforts of the devastating California wildfires, which worst affected the Pacific Palisades and Eaton regions of LA. 28 people were tragically killed and over 16,000 homes were destroyed in the devastation.

The FireAid benefit concert brought together over 20 of music’s biggest names including Eilish and Armstrong, as well as others like Stevie Nicks, Nirvana, Alanis Morissette, and Katy Perry – many of whom are from the affected region – to raise money for relief efforts and to prevent the impact of any future fires in the area.

The five-hour epic concert took place across two huge LA venues, the Kia Forum and the Intuit Dome, with an online live stream continuously switching between the action throughout the night. So far, the FireAid benefit has raised over $100 million in relief.
