Grammys 2024: Taylor Swift wins ‘Album of the Year’ with ‘Midnights’
At the highly anticipated Grammy Awards ceremony, Taylor Swift has been awarded the ‘Album of the Year’ trophy for her tenth studio album, Midnights. The album arrived in October 2022 to ubiquitous praise and was a hot favourite following the nominations.
Midnights was nominated alongside seven other albums: Boygenius’ The Record, Janelle Monáe’s The Age of Pleasure, Jon Batiste’s World Music Radio, Lana Del Rey’s Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, Miley Cyrus’ Endless Summer Vacation, Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts and SZA’s SOS.
In total, Swift was nominated for six Grammys this year, her other categories being ‘Best Pop Duo/Group Performance’ for ‘Karma’, ‘Song of the Year’ for ‘Anti-Hero’, ‘Best Pop Solo Performance’ for ‘Anti-Hero’, ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’ for Midnights and ‘Record of the year’ for ‘Anti-Hero’.
Her victory in the ‘Album of the Year’ category has made her a history-maker. She is now the first performer to have won the award four times. Previously, she had been tied for three victories alongside Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon and Frank Sinatra.
The prestigious awards are presented by the Recording Academy of the United States and intend to recognise outstanding achievements in music. The academy presents awards for various accomplishments, including ‘Best Single’, ‘Best Album’, ‘Best Artist’ and ‘Best Music Video’. The first Grammy ceremony was held on May 4th, 1959, and it has since been held annually to recognise the excellent music released over the previous 12-month term.
This year’s ceremony marked the 66th Annual Grammy Awards. Held on Sunday, February 4th, the event awarded music released between October 1st, 2022, and September 15th, 2023. The ceremony was held at the Crytpo Arena in Los Angeles and was hosted by South African comedian Trever Noah.
