Grammys 2024: Watch Joni Mitchell perform ‘Both Sides Now’ at ceremony

At the 66th edition of the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on February 4th, Joni Mitchell wowed the Californian crowd by performing a dazzling rendition of ‘Both Sides Now’.

Surprisingly, the performance marks the first time that the legendary singer-songwriter has played live at the annual event. Mitchell’s 2023 release, Joni Mitchell at Newport, was also triumphant for ‘Best Folk Album’. The singer-songwriter won out over the likes of Paul Simon, The Milk Carton Kids and Rufus Wainwright.

The album was taken from Mitchell’s first live performance in eight years, which took place at the historic festival in 2022. Since making her live return at the Newport Folk Festival, Mitchell headlined The Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington, D.C., and is scheduled to play The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles later this year.

Despite never previously performing at the ceremony, Mitchell has a storied history with the Grammys. Her first award dates back to 1969 when she won ‘Best Folk Performance’ for her second album, Clouds. Over the years, Mitchell has been nominated 18 times, winning nine awards at the prestigious ceremony.

Mitchell last won a Grammy in 2022 for ‘Best Historical Album’ after releasing Joni Mitchell Archives – Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963–1967), beating off competition from esteemed artists such as Marian Anderson and Prince.

Meanwhile, the Grammys ceremony was closed in style by Billy Joel, who took to the stage to deliver the live debut of his new single ‘Turn The Lights Back On’. The track marks Joel’s first composition since 2007. However, the singer-songwriter, whose last studio album was released in 1993, still has no plans to make another LP.

Billie Eilish, SZA, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, Travis Scott, U2, and Burna Boy also performed at the ceremony. Meanwhile, Tracy Chapman teamed up with country star Luke Combs on ‘Fast Car’, which Combs topped the Billboard 200 chart with in 2023.
