Grammy-nominated singer cancels 32-date tour due to poor ticket sales

Grammy-nominated singer JP Saxe has cancelled his entire 32-date tour of North America due to poor ticket sales.

Before cancelling the planned run of dates, Saxe issued a rallying call to his fanbase, explaining the situation and informing them that it wouldn’t go ahead unless he successfully shifted 20,000 tickets in 48 hours.

Although Saxe says he was able to sell “a few thousand extra tickets” within this short time frame, it wasn’t enough to prevent the unwanted cancellation.

In a TikTok video, Saxe, who was nominated for a Grammy in 2021 in the ‘Song of the Year’ category, shared: “I am beyond grateful to everyone of you who bought one. Those few thousand tickets are a reminder that being transparent in failure sometimes can be more powerful than the facade of success. They’re a reminder of how wonderful it can be to ask for help and watch a community come together.”

He apologised for the cancellation, promised full refunds to everybody that bought tickets and noted that his message was delivered “with a small side of immense gratitude from a dorky ginger Canadian”.

Additionally, n an op-ed for Variety, Saxe explained why he chose to be honest with his fans, stating that his mindset was, “Take the L, try again next year.”

The singer-songwriter elaborated: “The industry standard in this situation is to offer some ego-saving explanation — ‘wrong timing,’ ‘new opportunities,’ ‘a scheduling conflict,’ ‘illness,’ ‘global warming…’ What you’re not supposed to say is: ‘Hey, I guess people aren’t really fucking with me right now.’”

The tour, which was scheduled to begin in September, would have seen him play mid-sized venues, such as the 1,800-capacity Brooklyn Steel in New York.

Last year, The Black Keys cancelled plans for an arena tour, which led to them firing their management. Additionally, Linkin Park, who recently played their biggest headline show at Wembley Stadium, have downsized their upcoming Los Angeles show from Dodger Stadium to the Inuit Dome.
