Golden Globes 2026: Owen Cooper makes history with victory at ceremony

Adolescence star Owen Cooper has made history at the Golden Globes as the youngest ever winner of the ‘Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television’ category.

At just 16 years old, Cooper became the youngest winner of the category in history, beating out seasoned competition in the form of Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs, and his Adolescence co-star Ashley Walters to the prize.

His win broke the record previously set by Chris Colfer, who won the same category at 20 years old in 2010 for his role in Glee. It also makes Cooper the second youngest Golden Globe winner in history, after Ricky Schroder took home the prize for ‘New Star of the Year’ aged nine in 1980.

During his speech, Cooper said: “Standing here at the Golden Globes does not feel real whatsoever. What an incredible journey me and my family has been put through,” before adding, “We are forever grateful for what these people have done for me and my family.”

Going on to reflect on the seismic success he has enjoyed at such a young age from his breakout role, the actor noted that he still considers himself an “apprentice” and is “still learning every day” as he continues to rise the ranks of the industry.

It marks a streak of enduring success for Adolescence, after Cooper previously became the youngest ever Emmy winner for his role in the show. In terms of the Golden Globes, however, it was a massive night with Erin Doherty and Stephen Graham also winning their respective categories.

After his own win for ‘Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television’, Graham appeared to confirm hotly-tipped rumours that Adolescence is set for a return with a second series possibly in the works.

When asked by reporters about this potential following his victory, Graham replied: “I cannot answer that question because it’s somewhere in the deep recesses of my mind and Jack’s mind, and we’ll pull it out in three or four years, so stay tuned.”

Referencing the show’s co-creator Jack Thorne, it follows speculation since April last year that the production company Plan B have been in talks with director Philip Barantini about a follow-up to the Netflix smash hit.
