Golden Globes 2025: ‘Shōgun’ wins big in TV categories
FX’s hit historical drama Shōgun swept the television categories at the Golden Globes 2025, just like it dominated the last Emmy Awards ceremony in September 2024.
The show – set in feudal Japan in the year 1600 and tagged by many as the new Game of Thrones – was nominated for four trophies and took home all four. It won the big award of the night, ‘Best Television Series – Drama’, and lead actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai landed ‘Best Actor in a TV Series – Drama’ and ‘Best Actress in a TV Series’ respectively, for their roles as the powerful Lord Yoshii Toranaga and the noble Toda Mariko. Tadanobu Asano also won ‘Best Supporting Actor – Television’ for his hugely entertaining portrayal of the devious Lord Yabushige.
While accepting his award, Sanada gave a heartfelt speech aimed at those hoping to follow his path into acting. He said, “Thank you, Golden Globes, for recognising me. For the young actors and creators in the world: please be yourself, believe in yourself and never give up.” Sawai highlighted her short speech with a moment that got a big laugh, saying, “Thank you to the voters for voting for me, even though I would vote for Kathy Bates every day.” Asano took the opportunity to introduce himself to a worldwide audience by saying, “Maybe you don’t know me. I’m an actor from Japan, and my name is Tadanobu Asano. This is a very big present for me, thank you so much. Thank you, Shōgun team, I’m very happy.”
The ceremony was also a big night for Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, while Demi Moore won her first-ever acting award for her memorable role in The Substance. Be sure to check out the full list of winners here.
What’s next for ‘Shōgun’?
Even though the 10-episode season of Shōgun told the entire story of James Clavell’s classic 1975 source novel, in May 2024, FX announced that two more seasons were in the early stages of development. The network revealed that a writer’s room was being convened to aid husband-and-wife showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks with the task and that Clavell’s estate would also be involved in the process.
