Golden Globes 2025: Jodie Foster praises streamers for “exciting narrative filmmaking”
At the 82nd annual Golden Globes, Jodie Foster took home the ‘Best Actress – Miniseries or Television Film’ award for her role as Chief Liz Danvers in HBO’s True Detective: Night Country. Following this success, the actor revealed that she thinks streaming sites are providing the “most exciting narrative filmmaking” right now.
It was an evening featuring other significant wins by older female actors. The most notable was Demi Moore, who won ‘Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy Or Musical’ for her work in The Substance. In her acceptance speech, she spoke about overcoming a “low point” in her career before signing on for the film.
Following her success, Foster spoke to reporters backstage and told Deadline that she believes streaming is leading narratively in filmmaking. “Honestly, I think the most exciting narrative filmmaking right now is being done on streaming. That’s where I really go to see performances and to see characters build over time,” she said.
However, Foster did add that filmmaking, in general, is in a very healthy place at the moment: “Although I have to say the features this year are amazing, for me as a feature person, it’s great to see that both can coexist, and there are different ways of telling stories.”
Touching on the other wins by older actors at the Golden Globes, and the fact she also won an Emmy for her performance in the fourth season of True Detective, Foster called it a “golden age” for the demographic in Hollywood.
Moore’s acceptance speech highlighted the brutal reality facing women in Hollywood and the film industry—indicative of a broader societal issue—and was one of the evening’s most important moments. The 62-year-old Foster also commented on this and noted how getting older has allowed her to not care about opinions and other trivial things as she once did.
She explained: “I think something happens, there’s like an organism that gets released in your bloodstream — I’m not a doctor, so don’t follow me on that one — but it just feels like there’s a hormone that happens where suddenly you go, ‘Oh, I don’t really care about all the stupid things anymore, and I’m not going to compete with myself.’ “
“I’m excited about what’s left of my life and who I become, and the wisdom that I can bring to the table. So for me, this is the most contented moment of my career, and I never would have known that. I just never would have known that. But something happened the day I turned 60, and it all just came to pass,” Foster concluded.
True Detective: Night Country was in the running for three awards at the Golden Globes 2025. One was ‘Best Limited or Anthology Series or Television Film’, and Foster’s co-star Kali Reis was nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or Television Film’.
