Golden Globes 2024: ‘Succession’ takes major TV honours
The final season of any prestigious TV series is arguably in with a better shot at awards season recognition than any of its previous runs for the sole purpose of sending it out on a high note. Although it helps exponentially that Succession was already regarded as one of the century’s finest episodic dramas.
Jesse Armstrong’s creation took home the biggest small screen prize of the night after being named ‘Best Television Series – Drama,’ making a little bit of history in the process as just the third show to have ever claimed that distinction three times.
It’s even more impressive having managed to do so over the course of just four seasons, with the three wins apiece shared by The X-Files and Mad Men occurring over 11 and seven, respectively, leaving Succession to bow out with a an impressive success rate.
With Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, and Kieran Culkin comprising half of the six nominees for ‘Best Actor – Television Series Drama,’ it was almost inevitable that one of them would win. However, with Cox and Strong having emerged victorious in previous years, it was Culkin who was given his roses this time around.
Sarah Snook claimed the prize for ‘Best Actress – Television Series Drama’ in her very first nomination in that particular category, with Matthew Macfadyen named ‘Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film.’
Once again, the latter category was very Succession-heavy with Alexander Skarsgård and Alan Ruck also in the running, but it was fitting, given the conclusion of Tom Wambsgans’ character arc, that the actor who ended up as the erstwhile head of the family and CEO of Waystar Royco after the GoJo buyout came out on top.
The infighting of the Roy family may have reached an end on television, but there will have been plenty of celebration among the cast and crew after they cleaned up at the Golden Globes.
