Golden Globes 2024: Billie Eilish wins ‘Best Original Song’ for ‘Barbie’ hit
At the 81st Golden Globes ceremony, Billie Eilish and her brother, Finneas, took home the ‘Best Original Song’ award for their Barbie hit, ‘What Was I Made For?’
The track was up against two other songs from Barbie the Album, Dua Lipa’s ‘Dance The Night’ and Ryan Gosling’s ‘I’m Just Ken’. Jack Black, Lenny Kravitz, and Bruce Springsteen also received nominations in the category for their musical contributions to The Super Mario Bros Movie, Rustin, and She Came to Me respectively.
Beating out the fierce competition, Eilish opened her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes ceremony by thanking a number of people, including director Greta Gerwig, co-writer Noah Baumbach, star Margot Robbie and her brother and producer Finneas, deeming the latter “the reason I am who I am.”
“It was exactly a year ago almost that we were shown the movie, and I was very, very miserable and depressed at the time,” Eilish recalled, “And writing that song kind of saved me a little bit, and a year later and here we are.”
“It’s really surreal,” she concluded, “I feel incredibly, incredibly lucky. Incredibly lucky and grateful. You guys scare the living hell out of me, everyone in this room, but thank you so much. Thank you. This means the world.”
‘What Was I Made For?’ marks Eilish and Finneas’ second win in the category. The duo first took home the title in 2022 for ‘No Time to Die’, their theme song for the James Bond movie of the same name.
In a recent interview, Eilish broke down ‘What Was I Made For?’, stating: “I feel really proud. If I can be honest, I feel like it’s one of my best vocal performances I’ve ever given.”
