Gloria Gaynor says she had “wonderful” conversation with Donald Trump at Kennedy Centre Honors
Gloria Gaynor has described her conversation with Donald Trump at the Kennedy Centre Honors as “wonderful”.
Gaynor was celebrated at the event, which was held at the Kennedy Centre on December 7th, alongside Sylvester Stallone, Kiss, George Strait, and Michael Crawford.
The event was also hosted by Trump, which marked the first time in history that a sitting president had inserted themselves in that position.
Now, in a new conversation with People following the event, Gaynor heaped praise on the Republican and said of her exchange with Trump, “It was wonderful.”
The ‘I Will Survive’ singer also revealed, “I’d met him before, and he’s always very personable and very pleasant.”
Although Gaynor said that Trump didn’t explain why she was picked for the award, he did say that he “believed that my song had done so much for so many people”.
Gaynor revealed she was “in shock” upon learning that she was set to be recognised by the Kennedy Centre, adding, “It’s so wonderful to be counted among all these other great artists, and with all of their accomplishments. I’m blessed.”
The singer-songwriter hasn’t outwardly endorsed Trump’s politics. However, in August, it emerged that she had made a series of private donations to Republican politicians in recent years.
Per Meidas Touch, between 2023 and 2024, Gaynor made donations which totalled almost $22,000 to a series of right-wing politicians and groups.
Notable donations include $2,160.57 to Mike Johnson, the 56th speaker of the United States House of Representatives, $1190.53 to the National Republican Senatorial Committee, $2041.50 to Republican senator Marsha Blackburn, and $1242.28 to Josh Hawley, who also serves as a Republican senator.
