Glastonbury 2025: Charli XCX burns ‘Brat’ sign and marks the end of an era
It only took two songs at Charli XCX‘s headline set for the stage to be set alight. The musician burned down her own Brat album cover at The Other Stage during her Glastonbury Saturday extravaganza.
How long can Brat summer live? It’s a question Charli has been asking herself; at her recent curated festival, LIDO, she deemed it a “forever thing”. Now, it seems the singer has changed her mind. Fire was the only way forward.
After playing the ‘365’ remix, as well as ‘360’, Charli posed dramatically as she burnt the Brat album cover behind her, fresh with new stretches and tears. It’s an image included in her latest music video for ‘Party 4 U’, in which she climbs a ladder to a billboard with her face on, and begins pulling at it furiously, attempting to rip up the image. She splashes it and herself with black paint. Eventually, she takes a lighter to the artwork. As it catches fire, she sits on a sofa before the inferno, smoking a cigarette and staring into the distance, forlorn.
The message is no less powerful on The Other Stage. After the hot display, she bulldozed straight into a ferocious version of Brat’s first single, ‘Von Dutch’, twerking and riling up the crowd with her Essex charm. After this, she brought the pace down for a reflective rendition of ‘I might say something stupid’. The lyrics “I’m famous but not quite” feel out of place in front of the thousands upon thousands of supporters.
Charli quickly launched into fan favourite ‘Apple’, which usually sees a famous, familiar face take on the TikTok dance. This time, it was Gracie Abrams and pals who found their faces up there on the big screen. “I love you, Gracie!” Charli yelled over a large glass of wine once the moves were thrown.
Friday night at Glastonbury saw The 1975 headline the Pyramid Stage and Loyle Carner headline the Other Stage. During Charli XCX’s set, Neil Young, Scissor Sisters and Doechii compete for the attention of the rest of the festival goers. On Sunday, Olivia Rodrigo will close the weekend.
