Glastonbury 2024: Watch Cyndi Lauper perform ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’
Every year, Glastonbury Festival springs a handful of surprises into its line-up and book names that rarely appear at any other festival in the United Kingdom, such as Cyndi Lauper, who turned the Pyramid Stage into pandemonium when she performed ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’.
Taking to the stage in the early afternoon on June 29th, Lauper attracted a sizeable crowd to her set as she prepared to whistle off into the sunset. However, as she gets underway on her farewell tour, it’s only right that Worthy Farm has a proper chance to spend an hour in her company in the blazing Somerset heat.
Although Lauper remains in good health, she’s taken the decision to step out from the touring side of the music business while she’s still at the peak of the powers and able to say goodbye on her terms, which includes Glastonbury.
The iconic pop singer recently revealed during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live: “For me, I wanted to have a chance to do this when I’m feeling strong. I want to celebrate with people. Really celebrate with people, and make it fun.”
With a headline arena tour scheduled to hit the United Kingdom later this year, there’s no greater advertisement to attend her set than the rendition of ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’ that caused those at the Pyramid Stage to erupt into a mass sing-a-long.
It’s a track that’s synonymous with Lauper, and the biggest of her career. Upon release in 1983, ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’, was an international super hit, topping the charts across the continents, and selling million copies in the process.
Most importantly, the track empowered women and became a feminist anthem, which still resonates with millions today. Over 40 years after it was released, ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’ remains a sticky-floored nightclub staple, and the widespread of ages in the crowd is further proof of its long-lasting appeal.
“I wanted ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’ to be an anthem for women around the world – and I mean all women – and a sustaining message that we are powerful human beings,” Lauper once explained in the book I Want My MTV. “I made sure that when a woman saw the video, she would see herself represented, whether she was thin or heavy, glamorous or not, and whatever race she was.”
Still to come on June 29th at Glastonbury, Keane, Michael Kiwanuka and Little Simz are set to grace the Pyramid Stage before Coldplay headline. Meanwhile, Bloc Party and The Streets are among those who will appear on The Other Stage before Disclosure headline.
