Girl in Red, the moniker used by Norwegian musician Marie Ulven, is prepping her debut album If I Could Make It Go Quiet for release, and the awesomely blunt garage rocker has given us a preview of the album in the form of a new song, the point-blank punk rock paean ‘You Stupid Bitch’.

“There’s this line from this movie I love, The Perks of Being a Wallflower that goes ‘we accept the love we think we deserve.’ It’s a very heartbreaking line, but it’s really what I was experiencing in this situation, where I was always there for this person who would get their heart broken, and I would just come running,” Ulven says.

“I would drop everything just to be there for them. That person would never see me as anything else than just a friend, even though I feel like I could’ve made her so happy… The core essence of this track is like, I’m obviously here for you, and I want to be with you, but you keep messing around with other people, and you keep getting broken. It’s this really direct, straightforward track.”

You could probably tell the straightforwardness from the title alone. If that didn’t do the trick, the opening lines dispel any mystery involved: “You let the wrong people love you/But you don’t see that, do you?” The title phrase isn’t really an insult, but more an exhausted exhalation for someone to just see the obvious already. “You stupid bitch, can’t you see/The perfect one for you is me”.

I love it. It’s catchy, it’s vulgar, and it doesn’t play around with froofy metaphors or symbolism. It’s refreshingly and earnestly candid about love in a way most artists wouldn’t really be comfortable with. Love, by way of confrontation, is eternal.

Take a listen to ‘You Stupid Bitch’ down below. If I Could Make It Go Quiet is set to be released on April 30th.
