German government doubles movie industry funding to €250 million

The government in Germany has approved a fresh round of federal funding which doubles the investment in its film industry to €250 million annually.

Per Cineuropa, the German Federal Film Fund and German Motion Picture Fund will also be supplemented by additional finances the German Federal Film Board, meaning that the overall support will rise to approximately €310 million a year, in a landmark decision for the country.

Set to be implemented from next year and beyond, the new funding will be paired with a 30 per cent rebate on costs for German productions, which was introduced earlier this year in order for the country to become a more attractive filming base for major motion pictures.

Responding to the announcement, the German Minister of State for Media, Wolfram Weimer, said: “We need more blockbusters and series hits made in Germany. This reform is the soundtrack to a new beginning,” hailing the funding approval as a “breakthrough”.

Highlighting the close work with the country’s Finance Minister to make the funding possible, Weimer added: “Together, we have managed to quickly remove the paralysing bottleneck in German film funding. The film industry can now plan reliably and produce more in Germany.”

The new move from Germany comes as many countries across Europe are becoming more eager to make themselves a hotspot for movie productions, especially since the traditional American Hollywood landscape seems to be in decline.

The UK has become a particular trailblazer in this respect, with many major blockbusters being filmed in the country, including the recent Jurassic World: Rebirth. Currently, Tom Holland is also being spotted on the streets of Glasgow while filming scenes for the highly anticipated Spiderman: Brand New Day, which is set to hit the big screen on July 31st, 2026.
