George Harrison’s foundation donates $500,000 to coronavirus relief fund
George Harrison’s foundation, Material World, has donated $500,000 to a string of different coronavirus relief funds.
The foundation, which was established by the former Beatles guitarist in 1973, will split their donation between the MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund, Save the Children and Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders).
To coincide with the donation, The Beatles official YouTube channel ‘The Inner Light Challenge’ with accompanying lyrics from the band’s 1968 non-album single ‘The Inner Light’: “Without going out of my door, I can know all things of earth/ Without looking out of my window, I could know the ways of heaven.”
Harrison’s widow, Olivia Harrison said of the donation: “These lyrics sung by George are a positive reminder to all of us who are isolating, quarantined or respecting the request to stay in our homes. Let’s get and stay connected at this difficult time. There are things we can do to help and we invite you to share your Inner Light.”
Taking their efforts further, Harrison’s Material World Foundation has said that they will donate a further $1 (up to $100,000) for every person who creates and shares their ‘Inner Light’ moment on social media using the hashtag #innerlight2020 as part of ‘The Inner Light Challenge’.
Olivia Harrison added: “This can be a verse, a chorus, or a line from the song, sing it, play it, hum it, strum it, paint it, knit it, chant it, plant it, pray or meditate and post it to social media,” in a statement.
The ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease was first officially identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei in China. As of March 29th, more than 677,703 cases of COVID-19 have been officially confirmed but the actual number is thought to be much higher due to substantial under-reporting of cases.
With more than 31,737 people having died from the virus, COVID-19 has now spread into more than 180 other countries—including mainland Europe, South America and North America. Given the exponential growth in cases in countries like Italy, Spain and the UK, the WHO have now stated that Europe was the current centre of the pandemic.
Below, Harrison’s son, Dhani, revealed his very own ‘Inner Light’ moment to get the ball rolling.
