George Clooney tells Joe Biden to stand down from presidential race
Hollywood star and supporter of the Democratic Party, George Clooney, has urged Joe Biden to step aside from the presidential race, claiming he’s too old for the role.
Only last month, Clooney hosted a $28 million fundraiser for Biden’s bid for election, but following the president’s performance in the recent televised debate against Donald Trump, he no longer believes the candidate is the best person to lead the Democratic Party.
While Clooney has nothing but respect towards Biden as a person, for the sake of the United States, he believes the best course of action is to publicly plead with the president to stand down.
In a piece for the New York Times, Clooney said he still “loves” Biden, but his recent experience in his company was a stark contrast from the person he once knew. “It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fund-raiser was not the Joe ‘big F-ing deal’ Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate,” Clooney said.
Clooney also criticised prominent figures within the Democratic Party for attempting to re-write history following the recent debate, claiming they are “telling us that 51 million people didn’t see what we just saw.”
The actor also said that the unanimous support for Biden has come because “we’re all so terrified by the prospect of a second Trump term that we’ve opted to ignore every warning sign,” but Clooney is refusing to stay silent any longer.
He continued: “Is it fair to point these things out? It has to be. This is about age. Nothing more. But also nothing that can be reversed. We are not going to win in November with this president. On top of that, we won’t win the House, and we’re going to lose the Senate.”
While few senior politicians have raised their head above the surface to share Clooney’s view, the actor claims that “every senator and congress member and governor” he has spoken to privately since the debate is allegedly in agreement.
“We can put our heads in the sand and pray for a miracle in November, or we can speak the truth,” Clooney concluded by saying.
The US election is set to take place on November 5th, and as it stands Biden will be standing against Trump. The current president is adamant he will continue, recently telling party members, “I want you to know that despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I am firmly committed to staying in this race, to running this race to the end, and to beating Donald Trump.”
The official Democratic Party nominee will be named at the upcoming Democratic National Convention DNC in Chicago from August 19th until 22nd. Therefore, it remains possible that Biden will be replaced by another politician if the pressure continues to grow.
