G Love loses retirement fund to crypto scam
American musician G Love has admitted to losing his “retirement fund” in an online crypto scam.
The 53-year-old, whose real name is Garrett Dutton, made the admission on social media, revealing to his followers that he accidentally installed a fake app on his device, which cost him his Bitcoin savings.
He shared on X on April 11th, “I had a really tough day today I lost my retirement fund in a hack/Scam when I switched my Ledger over to my new computer and by accident downloaded a malicious Ledger app from the Apple store. All my BTC gone in an instant.”
In a plea for help, the musician added with a hint of self-awareness, “This is either pathetic or funny and I feel both ways even say anything, but if anybody wants to help me re-up here’s my BTC address 3KMbvNuTHRW8FkGo2gCrkbTEpfFNnTN8HH”.
He continued, “Here’s the TX hash from my hack I lost 5.9 BTC all I had for ten years I worked on this fuuuuuck be careful out there,” before adding the code.
5.9 BTC equates to more than $436,000, with Bitcoin currently set at more close to $74,000.
In a later post, he frankly said of the situation, “I been in the crypto circus since 2017. Today they caught me off guard. It was my own damn fault for not being more diligent. But let it serve as a warning. There’s so many scams.”
As much as Dutton is saddened to have had his savings wiped out by one misplaced click on the App Store, he has been connecting with similar people from across the world that have fallen victim to the same scam, telling another individual in the same position, “Everybody works hard to try to get by and do as best they can for their family and I think it just can be all going in an instant the minute you let your guard down for one second it’s a tough road ride. Keep your head up better times the time coming.”
It’s unknown, at this stage, whether there is any possible way for him to retrieve his stolen Bitcoin, but KuCoin did contact Dutton to inform him they have “proactively taken measures to protect user assets”.
G Love is currently on the road this year across North America until September, and after recent events, it’s safe to say that there’s likely to be plenty more tours in the future, too…
