The beautiful friendship of Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman

There are few Hollywood legends that cause such a stir when combining their shared power on the screen, with filmmaking duos such as Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro and Saoirse Ronan and Greta Gerwig inducing a collective sense of awe and reverence for their work.

Many of these collaborative pairings have led to fierce friendships that only fuel the creative chemistry we feel on screen, leading to groundbreaking projects that can push the limits due to the trust built between them. However, one of the most unlikely pairings over the years has been between two of cinema’s most iconic leading men, Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood.

Freeman is known for his commanding screen presence and grizzly voice that has arrested global audiences, with Academy Award-nominated performances in the likes of Driving Miss Daisy, Shawshank Redemption and Street Smart, winning for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ in 2005 with Million Dollar Baby, which Clint Eastwood directed.

Of course, Eastwood is one of the few true Hollywood legends. His career spans decades, from Sergio Leone’s beginning of the spaghetti western genre to his iconic portrayal of Inspector Harry Callahan and his directorial work on Mystic River, Juror #2, and The Bridges of Madison County.

Have Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood ever worked together?

While the union of Eastwood and Freeman seems like a match made in heaven, they didn’t work with each other until 1992 on the American western Unforgiven, leading to an instantaneous screen chemistry and unique body of work. Both actors have been quick to express their admiration for each other, with Freeman praising Eastwood’s unique directing style and working with him twice more on Million Dollar Baby and Invictus.

After working with Eastwood on Unforgiven, Freeman spoke fondly about Eastwood’s directing style, saying, “He is so enabling. He is so out of your way as an actor and he likes to watch actors play. He expects you to know what you are doing and he’s going to take two giant steps back and let you do it.” He was instantly at ease with the freedom and sense of trust that Eastwood had in his actors, allowing for fluidity in their choices.

It was unsurprising when the pair united 12 years later for Million Dollar Baby, with Freeman expanding on his praise for the director after working on the boxing drama with Hilary Swank. The film led to Freeman’s first Oscar win, with the actor saying, “I think Clint is an actor’s director. He doesn’t direct actors. He directs movies. He hires actors, and it’s your job. And I love that about him that you establish your own character; you play it and do what the scene calls for. [He’ll] have the scene set up. Cameras will be where we want them to be. Lights will be where we want them to be. And go for it.”

The pair haven’t worked with each other since Invictus in 2009, with Freeman again expressing his love for the director when describing his initial thoughts on who should direct the Nelson Mandela drama, saying, “I can only think of two. Clint Eastwood, and then there’s Clint Eastwood.’ He’s the best director I know”, with Eastwood responding by saying, “That’s very kind of him. He’s obviously a man of very good taste and selectivity in life.”

But are Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman still friends?

Despite being famously private and elusive actors, both actors have maintained a friendship behind the scenes, with occasional insights into their connection during awards speeches and social media posts. In October of this year, Eastwood was presented with the Clint Eastwood Award for Cultural Leadership at the Monterey Jazz Festival, with Freeman describing how he was invited to present the award to his friend.

While they rightfully don’t feel the need to discuss their friendship in a public forum, it is clear from their past comments and praise towards each other that they are very fond of each other and have remained as strong influences in their creative and personal lives.
