Fox News call for boycott on Ethel Cain following comments on CEO assassinations
Fox News is going after musician Ethel Cain. Following some comments made by the artist about Luigi Mangione, the man arrested for the assassination of the UnitedHealthcare CEO, the news outlet is calling for a boycott of her work.
In December, Brian Thompson, the CEO of health insurance company UnitedHealthcare, was assassinated in New York City. 26-year-old Luigi Mangione was arrested while carrying a three-page manifesto in which he criticised the American healthcare system after a lengthy manhunt. Following his arrest and subsequent plea that he is not guilty, there has been an ongoing debate and conversation online about his actions, the US healthcare system and the complaints explored within his manifesto. In response to his arrest, the internet made him a kind of hero, with many supporting him or his cause or dubbing him the “hot assassin”.
In January, Ethel Cain chimed in on the conversation, expressing similar sentiments to that in the document. While stating that she wasn’t being “reactionary”, Cain dared to suggest that violence was “sometimes” the answer, using the hashtag “KillMoreCEOs”.
Initially sharing posts made by others about the powerful collectives such as insurance companies were able to “buy off Congress”, she then followed it up with her own thoughts.
“Not even trying to be reactionary or ‘edgy’ or say this shit for shock value, I genuinely mean what I say. Corporations giggle at protesting,” she began. “Why would anyone ever willingly come down off their throne that they’ve spent years building off the suffering of their fellow man? Nobody is getting visited by the ghost of christmas future, no one is having a change of heart.”
She continued, “You make them fear for their lives and hit them in the only place they hurt or nothing will ever get done.” She concluded, “It seems quite straightforward to me. ‘Violence is never the answer’ wrong. sometimes it is,” adding, “The world is burning and it’s very clear who’s holding the matches.”
These are the words that Fox News has taken issue with. As a Republican outlet, it’s unsurprising that they disagree with Cain’s stance as they declared her comments “sick” and “depraved”, likening it to “terrorism” and calling for a “boycott” of the singer.
“The message there is violence is the answer,” said Guy Benson, one of the panellists on the show, “You know who used that exact same mentality, that type of language? Terrorists. That is actual terrorism, what she’s talking about here … This should be a very clear black-and-white moral issue, and it is scary to see how much support that type of sentiment has gotten.”
Cain, who just released her new project, Perverts, has never been shy of getting into a political debate on her socials. Especially during the US election, the musician shared her thoughts outright with her audience as she called politics a “breeding ground for violent hatred”.
