Former Turnstile guitarist Brady Ebert could face possible life sentence
The charges against former Turnstile guitarist Brady Ebert have been upgraded to first-degree attempted murder.
Ebert was previously charged by the Montgomery County Police Department with one charge of attempted second-degree murder and another charge of assault in relation to an alleged incident that took place on March 29th.
The musician is alleged to have been shouting obscenities and honking his horn at the home of William Yates, the father of Turnstile frontman Brandon Yates. Then, as William came out to warn the rest of his family, Ebert allegedly swerved towards William, who moved out of the way and is claimed to have thrown a rock at the vehicle.
Ebert is then alleged to have driven his vehicle toward the family and injured William’s legs. Yates was hospitalised with serious injuries, but has since made it through surgery and been recovering.
However, on April 30th, a grand jury in Montgomery County indicted Ebert on an upgraded first-degree attempted murder charge, according to local news publication The Baltimore Banner.
The upgraded, more severe charge could lead to him serving life in prison if found guilty. In comparison, second-degree attempted murder comes with a maximum prison sentence of 30 years.
During a court appearance last month, Ebert proclaimed his innocence, claiming, “I’m sorry, but this is pure self-defence. I was straight-up attacked”.
Ebert is next due in court on May 8th for a scheduling conference.
Shortly after the incident, William Yates introduced Turnstile at Coachella via video message. He shared poignantly, “I’m Bill Yates, I’m the proud father of Brendan. They’re all sons of mine. They’ve been practising in the house for 13 years. Just recently they vacated the basement.”
Yates Sr continued, “Finally, after a dozen years, the larger the venue the better. They just enjoy the energy. All the fans out there: we love you, and Turnstile loves you. Enjoy the ride.”
