Former The Zutons guitarist Boyan Chowdhury suffers racial attack in Liverpool
Former guitarist of The Zutons, Boyan Chowdhury, has suffered a racist attack in Liverpool that has left him severely injured.
On March 22nd, the musician took to social media to share his experience of the assault that could have taken his life, writing, “I was racially attacked by a gang of lads yesterday afternoon. Got called a P***, SAND N***** and DIRTY A***.”
He continued, “Then one of [them] ran at me from the side with a two foot long piece of wood. If I hadn’t of turned around I believe I would’ve been struck on the back of the head and dead right now.”
This attack resulted in an injury that “split [his] head open down to the skull”. Chowdhury added, “They had ran back to his friends house to get the piece of wood to attack me. This city is fucking shit. Full of dirty horrible racist rats. And it’s just getting worse by the day.”
Merseyside Police are involved in the matter, confirming that the guitarist had been “racially abused” after the “altercation” with the gang of men in a “hate-related” offence.
A day later, Love Music Hate Racism stated support of one of the band’s original founding members, writing, “Love Music Hate Racism stands with musician Boyan of The Zutons and against the vile racists who attacked and assaulted him.”
The statement went on, “This gross act of far-right racist violence is a reminder of how important it is for us all to make clear that there are more of us than them.”
The organisation used this as a means of mobilisation, calling for Londoners to march through the British capital “as part of the Together Alliance demonstration this Saturday. Love The Zutons, Hate Racism. No Reform.”
The demonstration has been supported by the likes of Kneecap, Biran Eno, Fontaines DC, Joy Crookes, Frank Turner and more, who all signed up to the alliance when the march was announced in December of last year.
