Foo Fighters return with ‘Today’s Song’ and Dave Grohl pens emotional letter to fans to celebrate band’s 30th anniversary
To celebrate the band’s 30th anniversary, Foo Fighters have returned with their new single ‘Today’s Song’.
The song marks the first release from the Dave Grohl-fronted band since their 2023 album, But Here We Are, which was made following the heartbreaking loss of drummer Taylor Hawkins, who tragically died in 2022 while on tour with Foo Fighters in South America.
On the emotional new release, Grohl sings on the opening verse: I woke today screaming for change,
I knew that I must, So, here lies a shadow, Ashes to ashes, Dust into dust.”
Later, on the muscly chorus, Grohl issues a rallying cry, yelling, “Two sides to a river, Too troubled to cross, It might take you under, Today’s song, We’ll drown in the middle, Which side are you on? One way or another, Today’s song.”
Additionally, Grohl reflected on the band’s website of their journey so far: “In a note to fans that posted today, Dave Grohl wrote, “Over the years, we’ve had moments of unbridled joy, and moments of devastating heartbreak. Moments of beautiful victory, and moments of painful defeat. We have mended broken bones and broken hearts. But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can’t go it alone.”
He also thanked former members who have played their part in the Foo Fighters story, adding, “It should go without saying that without the boundless energy of William Goldsmith, the seasoned wisdom of Franz Stahl, and the thunderous wizardry of Josh Freese, this story would be incomplete, so we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the time, music, and memories that we shared with each of them over the years. Thank you, gentlemen.”
To his surprise, Freese was let go from the band earlier this year. According to the new press release, Foo Fighters’ current active members are Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett and Rami Jaffee, with no drummer listed.
Grohl ended the letter by poignantly paying tribute to the late Taylor Hawkins, writing, “And… Taylor. Your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever. The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivaled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence. We all miss you beyond words. Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination.”
Later this year, Foo Fighters will return to the road for a series of shows, which will take them to Jakarta, Singapore, Tokyo, Osaka and Mexico City. As of writing, no new album has been announced.
