Five underrated Florence + The Machine songs to get you excited for their return

Fans of Florence + The Machine were left ecstatic (and a little bit confused) recently as a new unsettling video shared by the band teased the release of new music coming soon.

The video was released on August 11th and shows the band’s lead singer, Florence Welch, digging a hole, sticking her head in it, and screaming. Yes, it’s odd, and it leaves us with a lot more questions than answers, but it also teases the fact that the band is clearly gearing up to drop something new, and that’s some of the most exciting music news we’ve had all year.

To further emphasise the fact that the band are clearly setting themselves up to release something, their website has been updated. Any promotion or links have been removed, and instead, fans can just see a gold moon symbol and the very simple message: “Something’s coming.”

Fans will no doubt wait in anticipation for new music, but with no date surrounding a release and no further information than two words and a screaming Welch, the amount of time it might take for the band to release something new remains up in the air. As such, if you are excited for new music but need something to occupy yourself while you wait for it, here are four underrated songs by Florence + The Machine that you may not have heard and that will get you excited for the band’s return.

Florence + The Machine’s most underrated songs

‘Breaking Down’

The beauty of Florence + The Machine is the versatility which lies at the heart of their music. While the band have some tracks which are upbeat and positively laced with energy, some of their other songs are slow and much more meaningful. ‘Breaking Down’ is an example of the latter, as this underrated gem is one of the band’s most wholesome and moving tracks.

If you commit a warm hug to sound, you’d be left with something like this. How can a song sound so good and yet also provide such a great deal of comfort? No doubt that whatever the band are planning in the future, they’ll channel this energy again, and we can’t wait to hear it.

‘Which Witch’

Florence and the Machine tease new music

This is one of the funkiest, most upbeat, and well-put-together tracks the band has ever released. The fact that this song doesn’t get more attention is truly a crime, as its unique construction sets it apart from the majority of music available today.

It’s always nice to be reminded just how innovative Florence + The Machine truly are, and this song is the perfect way to do it. The track deserves to be considered a classic by the band, and yet it continues to fly under the radar of the casual listener. Truly a crime. If you haven’t already, do yourself a favour and listen to this classic.

‘Pure Feeling’

Florence and The Machine - Florence Welch - 2025

A lot of people aren’t aware that ‘Pure Feeling’ even exists, and that’s truly a crime in and of itself. Of course, it’s not the listener’s fault; Florence + The Machine didn’t exactly make this song easy to listen to. You won’t find it on streaming sites; you will only discover it in the depths of an eBay shop or on YouTube. However, whichever way you can listen to the track, rest assured, it’s well worth the effort.

After writing ‘Pure Feeling’, despite Florence + The Machine liking the track, they didn’t think it fit the overall tone of their album How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, and as such decided to leave it off. They released the record on an exclusive deal with Target, but other than that, you can’t find it on any streaming sites. The track is truly a work of art, so get yourself online and find a way to check out what remains one of the band’s most underrated masterpieces.

‘Conductor’

Florence and the Machine unveil two new songs

On that same exclusive deal with Target, Florence + The Machine also released the track ‘Conductor’. Once again, this is a song that they liked but that didn’t fit with the rest of the album, so they opted to leave it.

What a tragedy that more people haven’t heard this song, as it remains a quintessential listen for any fan of Florence + The Machine. Coming in hot, energetic, moving and filled with emotion, this song offers the listener everything they already enjoy about Florence + The Machine.

‘I Will Be’

Florence + The Machine perform ‘Game of Thrones’ track ‘Jenny of Oldstones’ for first time

‘I Will Be’ certainly isn’t your conventional Florence + The Machine track, but sometimes it’s good to be reminded just how exceptional the band is at putting together music pieces. While it’s not strictly an instrumental song, the words are sparse, and those you hear add more to the atmosphere instead of giving you some inferred meaning for the track.

Because of the way the song sits outside the realm of what Florence + The Machine would usually do, a lot of fans haven’t taken to it, which is a shame, as this really is a masterpiece. Imagine if Florence + The Machine tried their hand at shoegaze, you would get something like this. It’s a masterclass in musicianship, deeply cinematic, and incredibly layered. Listen to it!
