First look at Spike Lee’s David Byrne film ‘American Utopia’ is here

We’ve been eagerly anticipating the latest Spike Lee film American Utopia as it focuses on Talking Heads legend David Byrne and his stunning Broadway show. Now, we have the first teaser trailer to get us excited.

The new film will arrive in October on HBO Max and judging by the clip below it could be a contender for Byrne’s finest concert film ever.

That’s no small priase either. The singer’s work on screen with his band Talking Heads is legendary. The band’s concert film Stop Making Sense is still regularly screened at cinemas around the globe thanks to its permeating energy.

Naturally, this film will operate a little differently as Byrne is no longer fronting a band but leading a show—American Utopia. There’s still the breadth of his back catalogue to be explored through the music but in a completely different way.

Lee’s version of the production that sees 11 singers belting out some of Byrne’s finest songs was recorded on a night on Broadway during Byrne and his ensembles run between October 2019 and February 2020.

The film will land on October 17th through HBO Max and, judging by the snippet we have below will be an essential watch for any Talking Head or David Byrne fan.
