‘First Light’: Lana Del Rey surprise releases James Bond theme song for new video game
Lana Del Rey has surprise released a new song called ‘First Light’ as a James Bond theme – except it’s for a new video game.
The singer sent her own fans, as well as Bond fanatics, into a headspin on April 16th when she unexpectedly released the track. However, it turns out that the song is in aid of the new video game 007 First Light.
According to Variety, ‘First Light’ has been made alongside five-time Bond composer David Arnold, with the game itself having been developed in collaboration with 10 Interactive and Amazon MGM Studios, who now own the spy franchise.
Rey’s song has all the classic hallmarks of a strong Bond theme, with moody vocals being teamed with a swooning string background, before a much more forceful chorus kicks into gear.
Of course, a horn section and a blast of the world-famous musical theme from the films also makes its way into ‘First Light’ at the conclusion of the chorus.
As much as the news may be disappointing to those excitedly looking forward to the next 007 instalment on the big screen, Amazon MGM Studios did offer a very scant update on the future of the films on the same day as the surprise video game song.
Courtenay Valenti, the head of film at the studio, told audiences at CinemaCon on April 15th “Don’t get too excited”, as they were undergoing the process of casting a new Bond, to take over from Daniel Craig, with “care and deep respect”.
Of what is currently known about the unspecified next film in the franchise is that it will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, written by Steven Knight, and produced by Amy Pascal and David Heyman.
Elsewhere, the plot for the new 007 First Light video game is “a fully original, reimagined origin story of James Bond,” that “presents a bold new take with a reimagined origin story, following a 26 year-old James Bond at the very beginning of his journey in the world of espionage.”
