Fernanda Torres apologises after blackface footage resurfaces

Oscars nominee Fernanda Torres has issued an apology after footage resurfaced of her wearing blackface in a Brazilian TV comedy sketch nearly two decades ago.

Torres shot the sketch as part of the three-hour Brazilian show Fantastico, which has been airing for 50 years. The clip, entitled ‘The Opposite Sex: The Family (Father Vs. Mother),’ was first shown 17 years ago and has begun circulating on social media in the wake of her historic Oscar nomination in the ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ category for her performance in I’m Still Here.

Her recent nomination made her only the second female Brazilian actor in history to be recognised by the Academy. Her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, previously picked up a ‘Best Actress’ nomination in 1998 for Central Station.

In a statement to Deadline, Torres said, “Almost 20 years ago, I appeared in blackface in a comedy sketch from a Brazilian TV show. I am very sorry for this. I’m making this statement as it is important for me to address this swiftly to avoid further pain and confusion.”

“At that time, despite the efforts of Black movements and organisations,” Torres continued, “the awareness of the racist history and symbolism of blackface hadn’t yet entered the mainstream public consciousness in Brazil. Thanks to better cultural understanding and important but incomplete achievements in this century, it’s very clear now in our country and everywhere that blackface is never acceptable.”

Torres concluded, “This is an important conversation we must continue to have with one another in order to prevent the normalisation of racist practices then and now. As an artist and global citizen, and from my open heart, I remain attentive and committed to the pursuit of vital changes needed to live in a world free from inequality and racism.”

Torres’ performance in Walter Salles’ political drama has already landed her a Golden Globe for ‘Best Performance By An Actress in a Film Drama.’ On March 2nd, 2025, Torres has the opportunity to add to her awards season haul at the Oscars.
