Golden Globes 2025: Fernanda Torres wins ‘Best Female Actor – Drama’
The latest iteration of the Golden Globes saw a number of big winners, such as The Brutalist and Emilie Pérez, including Fernanda Torres, who won ‘Best Female Actor – Drama’ for I’m Still Here.
Set in the 1970s, contextualised by the brutality of a period of military dictatorship in Brazil, Torres delivers a fantastic performance as the wife of politician Rubens Paiva, whose disappearance tears her family apart. Directed by Walter Salles, it was undoubtedly one of the best movies that came out in 2024.
Torres dedicated her Golden Globes triumph to her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who also starred in I’m Still Here as an older version of Torres’ character.
In her victory speech, Torres acknowledged how her mother was the first Brazilian woman to earn a Golden Globe nomination more than two decades ago.
While talking about the other nominees, Torres said: “I didn’t prepare anything because I was glad already… And this is such an amazing year for female performances, so many actresses here that I admire so much… I want to dedicate it to my mother. She was here 25 years ago.”
Adding, “And this is like a proof that art can endure through life, even in difficult moments like this amazing story… There’s something that is happening now in the world with so much fear. And this is a film that helped us to think how to survive in tough times like this.”
Torres beat out the likes of Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman and Tilda Swinton, with her turn in I’m Still Here standing out as one of the definitive performances of the year.
