Father John Misty shares new single ‘The Old Law’

Father John Misty has released a new single, titled ‘The Old Law’, available on all streaming platforms now.

The song might be familiar to some Father John Misty fans: It was previously known as ‘God’s Trash’, and debuted as part of his live set in autumn, 2024.

In the song, set with sweeping, cinematic Western-type guitars, Father John Misty repeats, “Year Zero in the summertime,” before rounding out his musings with the list, “Bagmember, slaycation, Hal Ashby, fast fashion.” It marks a turn towards the rockier sensibilities evidenced in some of his later albums.

The song was mixed by Michael Harris and Jonathan Wilson at Fivestar Studios in Los Angeles, and mastered by Adam Amyan at Ayan Mastering.

Father John Misty has a busy year ahead. He will kick a healthy dose of touring off on March 23rd in Ventura, California, in support of his previously released sixth studio album, Mahashmashana.

From there, the singer-songwriter, real name Josh Tillman, will embark upon plenty of headlining and festival tour dates, running through to May 17th in Pomona at The Fox Theatre. During this time, he will headline Boise’s Treefort Festival.

Following this, his UK and EU run begins on June 1st in Lisbon at Sagres Campo Pequeno, running through to June 14th in Wicklow.

During this time, the ‘Real Love Baby’ singer will appear at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound festival, as well as London’s Lido festival, alongside the likes of CMAT, and Sharon Van Etten and The Attachment Theory.

Far Out gave his latest release, Mahashmashana, a high-scoring four-and-a-half star review, observing, “Father John Misty singing about the collapse of the modern world is like Elvis belting out a love song. And as the artist gathers up all the best bits of every direction he’s ever taken, this new one is fueled by uncompromised greatness.”
