Fatboy Slim admits he’s lost “passion” to make new music

Norman Cook, better known under his stage name Fatboy Slim, has admitted that he no longer has the “passion” to record new music.

Although Cook has continued to sporadically release new singles, his last full-length album, Palookaville, arrived in 2004. This year, he has released two singles, ‘Role Model’ and ‘Bus Stop Please’, however, Cook has confirmed he currently has no plans for another record.

In a new interview with The Sun, Cook admitted of the recent releases: “My last two singles (‘Bus Stop Please’ and ‘Role Model’) just came out of a live show. They were both things that I made just to play on the side.”

The former Housemartins bassist then frankly revealed that he’s lost the passion to create that used to consume him, adding, “The thing is, you can’t make music unless you’re absolutely passionate about it and it drives you from the moment you wake up in the morning. I just don’t seem to feel like that any more.”

However, when it comes to playing live, Cook remains as committed as ever, stating, “I feel like that about DJing and about putting on things like this, but I’ve kind of lost my passion for making music.”

The electronic music icon admitted that he did attempt to make another album before concluding he’d rather spend his time performing rather than being in the studio, continuing, “For five years, I tried to beat myself up about it and go, ‘You should be doing this’. But then I thought, ‘Well, everybody likes my DJing and I enjoy that more, so I’ll do that’. I’m hoping that one day the passion will come back.”

In the coming months, Fatboy Slim is set to perform in Indonesia, Brazil, Australia and the United States. He’ll also headline festivals in the United Kingdom next summer, including Latitude and Kendal Calling.

Earlier this year, Cook made a surprise appearance with his former Housemartins bandmate Paul Heaton at Glastonbury Festival’s Pyramid Stage for a performance of ‘Happy Hour‘. It marked the first time the pair had shared a stage since 1988.
