‘Ain’t No Question Hard Enough’: Far Out’s ultimate Motown quiz

There has never been another label quite like Motown.

Arriving entirely out of left field in 1959, Berry Gordy’s small independent label quickly mushroomed into an R&B empire, dominating the singles charts of the 1960s and launching a litany of still-iconic names – Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye being a few of the notable highlights.

No matter which way you spin it, Motown changed the pop landscape forever. Perfecting the pop formula and earning well over one hundred top-ten entries to prove it, the label earned the adoration of everybody from The Beatles to Bruce Springsteen. The Fab Four were inarguably the defining band of that era, but they owed a core part of their spirit and sound to the inspiration provided by those discs bearing the Motown name.

Perhaps most impressively, though, Motown has never particularly gone out of fashion, either. Although its tendency to create infallible, chart-topping singles tended to tail off as the 1970s progressed, the label maintained a colossal audience for its golden-age output, in addition to legions of devoted listeners worshipping the label’s most obscure, forgotten releases, within the northern soul scene in England. Today, Motown’s relevance has yet to fully subside, even if Gordy sold off the label way back in 1988.

With that in mind, what better time is there to test your knowledge of Hitsville USA? Whether you are a disciple of Motown’s most obscure B-sides, a casual Stevie Wonder fanatic, or somebody who has only recently been exposed to the sweet sounds of Detroit soul, this is the place to find out just how well you know this otherworldly label.
