Far Out’s ultimate music quiz of 1965: are you up to the challenge?

A pivotal year in perhaps the most pivotal decade of the 20th-century, 1965 was a time dominated by political resistance, the civil rights movement, the ever-intensifying Cold War and, of course, a multitude of musical masterpieces.

With that time of political uncertainty, injustice, and protest came a fittingly cutting-edge soundtrack, spearheaded by the age of British Invasion, when the likes of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones acted as rock and roll ambassadors for their home nation.

Meanwhile, in the industrial heartland of Detroit, Berry Gordy and his roster of unparalleled talent were reaching the pinnacle of their soul power, with Motown Records giving even the Fab Four a run for their money when it came to the battleground of the pop charts.

Even if you turned away from the commercialism of the singles charts, the coming of the British Invasion was spawning countless garage rock outfits in the college towns of North America, culminating in a deluge of endearingly DIY, impossibly obscure records that would go on to form the bedrock of the punk rock realm.

Also in those college towns, a new drug named LSD was starting to creep into the scene, inspiring the psychedelic counterculture that was to follow in later years. As if that wasn’t enough, the dominance of Motown meant countless tiny soul labels sprang up across the US, with their miss-hit releases later becoming known as northern soul and finding a home on the dancefloors of industrial England.

If this introduction hasn’t already made it abundantly clear: 1965 was a landmark year for music and culture. With so much occurring in those fateful 365 days, though, some facts are bound to have fallen through the cracks. So, whether you’re of a vintage to recall those shady mid-1960s days, or simply want to test your knowledge of that groundbreaking year, we have put this quiz together with you in mind.
