Over 50,000 fans sign petition to rename Nashville airport after Dolly Parton

A new petition has gained traction proposing to change Nashville International Airport’s name to honour the Tennessee music icon, Dolly Parton.

The petition, which was originally made on January 21st, has since amassed over 50,000 signatures. It was made in response to a separate petition that proposed renaming the airport after President Donald Trump.

The petition highlights Parton’s contributions to the worlds of music, entertainment, and philanthropy. It specifically highlights the Imagination Library program, which has provided over 100 million books to children since 1995. It highlights how this is a testament to her impact and only a fraction of what she has achieved.

“As proud citizens of Tennessee, we are motivated by our deep-rooted admiration for the national treasure and Tennessee legend, Dolly Parton,” it begins.

“She is not only a celebrated artist who encourages love, acceptance, and goodwill through her music, but also a philanthropist, known for her countless contributions to society,” their statement adds.

It continues, “Dolly’s philanthropic efforts, her outstanding influence in the music industry, and the love she has instilled in our hearts through her actions and songs, truly make her a deserving candidate to have the Nashville International Airport named after her.”

Despite the growing support for the petition, no Tennessee lawmakers have cemented any plans to change the airport’s name. Nashville International’s airport’s current name, BNA, stands for Berry Fields Nashville, which is in honour of Colonel Harry S Berry. Berry was a World War I veteran and the first-ever administrator of the airport.
