Faith No More unlikely to reunite with Mike Patton, drummer confirms

The drummer of Bay Area alt-metal band Faith No More says singer Mike Patton is unlikely to perform with the band again.

As a recent guest on Dean Delray’s Let There Be Talk podcast, drummer Mike Bordin opened up about the band’s complicated relationship with their singer, who last performed with the group in 2016

After several pandemic-related complications, the band announced touring plans in 2021. However, only days before the tour was to commence, Patton cancelled the shows due to mental health issues that were “exacerbated by the pandemic”. The band appeared frustrated, along with fans, but ultimately supportive of the decision.

Nonetheless, the cancellation of 75 shows put a strain on the band. Bordin revealed on the podcast that when they saw the state Patton was in, “It was very clear that he was unable at that point to physically do it.”

Bordin continued: “We made the decision that, ‘Look, we’ve gotta support our guy. It wasn’t even an argument.”

Yet, Patton soon returned to playing live with his other project, a reactivated version of his very first band, Mr Bungle. Bordin seemed reluctant to elaborate on his complex feelings: “It doesn’t feel great to me. It honestly kind of hurts my feelings a little bit, but that’s personal. That’s a private thing.”

The band’s first two albums were recorded with singer Chuck Mosely, who passed away in 2017. Mosely was kicked out of the band in 1989, and replaced by 20-year-old Mike Patton.

As the frontman, Patton helped Faith No More record fan favourites like 1992’s Angel Dust and 1989’s The Real Thing. They split in 1998 and subsequently reunited in 2009, but they haven’t played a live show with Patton in almost a decade.

Now, it may never happen. Bordin hints that Patton appears unwilling to perform with Faith No More again, so their future remains uncertain.
